What practical help can an advisor provide?
An advisor can help a student compare programs, build a requirement checklist, plan preparation sessions and notice missing information. The value depends on the actual scope, the student’s needs and how the work is delivered.
Ask for concrete examples of the process: how programs are researched, how deadlines are tracked, how often meetings happen and what feedback is included. A clear service description is more useful than a broad promise to “maximize your odds.”
Support does not determine an admission decision
Universities make admission decisions under their own processes. An advisor cannot guarantee an offer, replace academic prerequisites or promise a scholarship outcome. A company’s past student results also do not, by themselves, establish how much the service caused those outcomes.
If a provider cites success rates, ask which students, time period and outcomes are included and how the numbers were calculated. Do not assume the same result will apply to a different applicant.
Keep the student’s work their own
Preparation should help the student understand requirements and communicate real experiences. Before using feedback on an assessed response, read the program’s assistance rules. Waterloo’s AIF instructions, for example, require applicants to complete and submit the form themselves.
Ask how a provider respects authorship. Practice and permitted feedback should not become someone else writing the application or inventing achievements. The student should be able to explain every experience and claim in their submission.
Compare paid support with the help already available
School counsellors, teachers, university admissions offices and public information sessions can answer many questions. Start by identifying what remains difficult: organizing multiple applications, comparing programs, sustaining a preparation schedule or understanding a specific requirement.
Then compare services against that need. Check fees, meeting frequency, deliverables, communication expectations, cancellation terms and who will work with the student. Include the cost of support in the family’s overall education budget.

- Who provides the support, and how is progress reviewed?
- How do you follow each university’s authorship rules?
- What are the full fees, terms and limits of the service?
Decide on fit
Paid support may be useful when it addresses a clear need at a cost the family can justify. It is not a requirement for a successful application. Start with the support you need and compare the process, rather than buying a promised outcome.
