How Lucas Secured His Spot at Western Ivey with AEO Status and Scholarships

From Doubt to Distinction: How Lucas Secured His Spot at Western Ivey with AEO Status and Scholarships

For many high school students, the dream of attending a top university like Western Ivey feels out of reach. The demanding grades, intricate essays, and competitive interviews can be overwhelming. But what if a "regular guy" could achieve what once seemed impossible?

Meet Lucas Vanderkant, a recent Admission Prep student from Toronto's De La Salle College High School, who did just that. He's officially headed to Western University with Ivey AEO (Admission to Ivey HBA with an Optional HBA program) status this fall, bolstered by two significant entrance scholarships. We sat down with Lucas to unpack his incredible journey and learn how he turned aspirations into achievements.

The Spark: A Dream Born in the Cafeteria

Lucas's journey to Ivey began, rather unexpectedly, in his school cafeteria during a university fair in grade 11. He was drawn to a booth simply marked "Ivey." As a representative explained the program—the flexibility of first and second year, followed by the deep dive into business in the third—Lucas had an epiphany. "That is exactly what I want," he recalls thinking.

However, the excitement was quickly followed by the daunting reality of Ivey's admission requirements. The grades, the essays, the rigorous application process—it all felt like a "real challenge." Yet, fast forward to today, and Lucas says, "Honestly, it feels like a dream come true." He attributes his success to hard work and the unwavering support from his family, friends, and the Admission Prep team.

Conquering Overwhelm: The Power of a Plan

The leap from typical high school academics to the intense world of university applications, essays, and interviews can feel like a tidal wave. Lucas admitted to feeling "pretty nervous" and "overwhelmed" at first. He worried about how to genuinely convey his story and personal profile without simply listing accomplishments.

"You need to put it together in a story that shows who you are as a person," Lucas emphasized. This is where the strategic planning he developed with his Admission Prep advisor became a game-changer. They helped him formulate a step-by-step plan, tackling tasks one at a time while still maintaining his crucial Grade 12 marks.

"Having a plan and being structured and organized was really helpful for me," Lucas reflected. This methodical approach to a seemingly chaotic process was, in his words, "extremely helpful with anything." It transformed the daunting into the manageable, giving him a clear roadmap to success.

Beyond the Resume: Crafting a Genuine Story

Many students fall into the trap of "resume stuffing," trying to do everything to impress admissions committees. Lucas learned that genuine engagement trumps quantity every time.

"It's not... about doing everything. I think it's about doing things with meaning that contributes to you as a person," he explained. Schools, he notes, see countless applications filled with lists of accomplishments. What truly stands out is authenticity and passion.

For Lucas, this meant initiating a fitness club for younger students at his school. Despite the administrative hurdles involved in getting it off the ground, this initiative aligned perfectly with his genuine interest in fitness and helping others. "When you're talking about things that you're passionate about, it's just so much easier because you do have genuine love for those things," Lucas shared, crediting this approach as a significant factor in his success.

This focus on creating a compelling narrative from his genuine experiences was a key shift in his application strategy with Admission Prep. It wasn't just about what he did, but how he connected it all to tell his unique story.

Facing Failure: A Stepping Stone, Not a Stumbling Block

Even the highest achievers encounter setbacks. Lucas was no exception. He vividly recalled the sting of his first rejection: a scholarship he'd applied for early. "My heart kind of sank," he admitted, wondering if it was "the first of many rejections to come." He also battled imposter syndrome, comparing himself to other accomplished students and doubting his own chances.

His Admission Prep advisor was instrumental in pulling him out of this mindset. The consistent message: "You need to stay true to yourself. You need to keep working hard. We have a goal in place... If you just keep on working towards that goal, you're gonna get to a place that you wanna be."

Lucas's advice to students facing similar doubts is profound: "You might actually fail... but you need to learn from these failures because if you never fail, you're never going to learn. And if you never learn, how can you ever get better?" He now views those early rejections not as defeats, but as valuable "steps along my journey" to his ultimate goal.

Rewarding Results: Scholarships and Self-Discovery

Lucas's hard work and resilience paid off handsomely. In addition to his acceptance into Western Ivey with AEO, he proudly secured the Western Scholarship of Distinction ($3,500) and the BASF scholarship ($3,500).

Beyond the financial rewards, Lucas sees the entire journey as profoundly "rewarding." He's learned to trust and believe in himself, understanding that he's "capable of accomplishing whatever I put my mind to." The process taught him invaluable lessons in perseverance, planning, and handling adversity—skills he knows will serve him well in university and beyond.

"If you put in 100% of your effort, you will be 100% rewarded," Lucas concluded. "There's no better formula to success."
