What Do Supplementary Applications Ask?

Timed writing. Queen's includes a 10-minute written response. McMaster's engineering supplementary gives you 10 minutes for its written question.

References. UBC also asks for the names of two referees, one of whom must be able to speak to an activity described in your long answers.

How Are Supplementary Applications Evaluated?

Real people read them. UBC uses trained readers who evaluate every Personal Profile against defined criteria, including engagement, leadership, substance, and voice, comparing your answers with thousands of others.

McMaster scores each Health Sciences Supplementary Application with multiple reviewers, and assigns an additional reviewer when the scores disagree significantly.

Queen's publishes scoring rubrics for its Supplementary Application, grading responses on set criteria rather than gut feel.

The pattern across schools is consistent. Specific, reflective, authentic answers score well. Generic lists of accomplishments do not.

How Should You Approach Yours?

Start with your program's rules, then reflection. McMaster Health Sciences explicitly prohibits admissions consultants and help from others. Its Supplementary Application must be completed entirely by you and warns against paid coaching services. Follow that restriction; the general writing and coaching advice below is not an invitation to obtain prohibited help on that application.

For programs that permit guidance, strong answers explain what you learned and why it matters, not simply what you did.

When Should You Start Preparing?

Grade 12 is when you submit. It is not when you start.
